Christopher John Osgood (born November 26, 1972) is a former Canadian professional ice hockey goalie who played with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers. With 401 victories in the NHL regular season, he is presently ranked ninth all-time in the league’s history. Osgood began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings and then played for the New York Islanders and the St. Louis Blues before returning to the Red Wings in 2005. Osgood has 17 years of NHL experience. In his professional hockey career, he won three Stanley Cup titles, all with the Detroit Red Wings, with two of them occurring when he was the team’s starting goalie. When Osgood made a spectacular save, he was referred to as “Ozzie” by the crowd, and he was also referred to as “The Wizard of Oz” by the media. Osgood is now working as a studio commentator for Fox Sports Detroit, where he covers the Detroit Red Wings. Rick DiPietro temporarily wore a conventional player’s helmet/cage combination instead of the modern one piece goalie mask in 2011, after DiPietro was injured in a fight with Brent Johnson. Osgood was the last NHL goaltender to do so, since he was grandfathered by the NHL. The Hartford Whalers defeated him in a shootout on March 6, 1996, making him one of only eleven goaltenders in NHL history to have scored a goal, and he is also one of only six goaltenders in NHL history to have scored by shooting the puck directly into the opponent’s net (as opposed to a “own goal”).
